Lega Deposit

National libraries worldwide are entrusted with preserving the intellectual and cultural outputs of their nations for future generations. At the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS), we proudly uphold this responsibility through the legal deposit system.
What is Legal Deposit?
The Books and Newspapers Act, Cap 111 (1987) mandates every publisher in Kenya to submit two copies of each newly published title to KNLS within 14 days of publication. This includes:
- Books
- Journals
- Sheet music
- Maps, plans, charts, or tables
Role in the Kenya National Bibliography (KNB)
Legal deposits are instrumental in compiling the Kenya National Bibliography (KNB), a yearly comprehensive record of all publications in Kenya.
- KNB Benefits:
A statistical overview of Kenya's publishing industry.
Insights into national intellectual and cultural growth.
A valuable reference for researchers, students, and bibliophiles.

KNLS has been publishing the KNB since 1980, assuming full responsibility in 1984 after amendments to the KNLS Board Act.
