Our Braille Services at the Kenya National Library Service (knls) encompass a rich collection of approximately 600 titles, covering both adult and junior fiction. In addition to Braille books, we provide large-print materials, primarily targeted at adult readers. The unit also offers computer and internet services tailored for the visually impaired community.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the Braille Services unit features two computers with screen readers—JOS and NVDA. These screen readers empower both visually impaired staff and users to efficiently access and navigate computers. Furthermore, the unit offers large-font magnifiers, such as the Smart View and CCTV, utilizing American and German technology. Users with low vision can customize magnification settings according to their preferences.

Our commitment extends to audio books, audio navigators, and an easy-to-use e-book device. Each navigator, containing 4-6 titles, offers a user-friendly experience. The device, with rechargeable batteries and simple buttons, allows blind users to effortlessly select and listen to their chosen titles.

Operating beyond the library walls, the unit conducts outreach programs, delivering selected materials to special and regular schools within a radius of 80km from the headquarters. Newly blinded individuals find support in learning braille reading skills and mobility through the unit.

Our services extend to offering referral assistance in line with the Kenyan constitution, ensuring that individuals with disabilities, including the newly blinded, are informed about tax exemptions and quality healthcare. The National Council for Persons with Disability plays a crucial role in registering and recommending individuals for exemption to the Kenya Revenue Authority.

Emphasizing collaboration, the unit actively networks with other service providers such as the Kenya Society for the Blind and Kenya Institute for the Blind. This collaborative platform facilitates the exchange of information and materials, enhancing services for the visually impaired.

In-house production capabilities include a braille printer and relevant technologies for reproducing print books in braille. This ensures that blind users have access to a wide selection of books based on their preferences.

With a current membership of approximately 200 individuals, the unit serves not only the blind but embraces a disability mainstreaming approach. All types of disabilities, irrespective of age, sex, or faith, are catered to. The unit is staffed by two visually impaired individuals dedicated to providing inclusive services at the Kenya National Library Service.
